This fall I’m joining Table for Two USA (TFT)’s “Change the World with Onigiri #OnigiriAction” campaign from October 7th to November 20th. This campaign aims to provide 1 million school meals to children in need around the world.
During the campaign, every rice-ball-related post on the campaign website or social media with #OnigiriAction will provide five school meals to children in need! And I want to encourage YOU to participate in this campaign with me!
The campaign commemorates World Food Day, established in honor of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization by the UN in 1945. As an NPO with roots in Japan, the Table for Two USA campaign highlights onigiri (rice balls) made from rice, one of Japan’s major agricultural products. In Japan, rice balls are simple comfort food made with love for someone special.
One Onigiri photo post brings 5 school meals!
Last year, I posted a few pictures of my lunch, that include Onigiri, on my Instagram account with #OnigiriAction.
Each picture of Onigiri brings 5 school meals to children in need. Yes, it’s that simple; sponsor organizations will donate 5 school meals per photo submitted! In Africa, 25 cent donation can provide one school meal to a child. In the U.S., the same donation enables schools to provide school meals upgraded with fresh vegetables and fruits in low-income neighborhood school districts.
Here’s How to Participate:
Step 1. Snap a picture of your Onigiri
Take pictures of your Onigiri preparation and enjoyment. You can take a picture of your Onigiri preparation to show off your cooking talent, OR snap a photo you eating Onigiri with your friends. You get to contribute to a good cause and let your creativity shines at the same time!
Step 2. Post your photos on the Website or on Your SNS
You can submit your photos via
- A) Upload your photo on the campaign page
- B) Post your photo from your social media (Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter) with hashtag #OnigiriAction (and #justonecookbook so I can check your creation too!)
To get more detailed info, you can download the handbook here.
Let’s make a difference together #OnigiriAction!
The 4th Onigiri Action campaign of 2018 resulted in great success. In just 42 days, 648,110 people around the world participated in the events, and 201,023 onigiri photos were posted, gaining 45,234,102 likes on social media. As a result, we could provide 1,056,000 school meals so that over 5,200 children were able to eat for an entire school year.
I know I can count on the supportive and caring JOC community to make this campaign a success again. Together we can end childhood hunger by connecting kids to the healthy food they need, every day. Let’s join #OnigiriAction together for the great cause!
