How to Make Kamaboko Rose (Kohaku Bara 紅白薔薇)

This lovely rose pattern can easily made with the red and white kamaboko fish cakes and it’s a pretty decoration for any occasion! Girls would especially love the special touch that brighten their bento boxes. You can also use this kamaboko rose in other happy occasions such as garnish on Chirashi Sushi on Doll’s Festival.

Two Japanese fish cakes (Kamaboko), seven beautiful designs! Make ordinary fish cake into decorative designs on this Oshogatu (Japanese New Year)!


Step 1: Remove kamaboko from the wooden board.

Step 2: Slice off the uneven edge on both ends.

Step 3: Cut red-skin kamaboko into three 0.1 mm-thick slices.

Step 4: Cut the white kamaboko into a 1/2-inch (12 mm) slice.

Step 5: Make a slit in the middle.

Step 6: Stagger 3 thinly sliced kamaboko on top of each other.

Step 7: Roll up the slices.

Step 8: Place the kamaboko roll inside the slit of white kamaboko. Now you have a beautiful kamaboko rose that symbolizes love and joy.
