You know you love margaritas: but have you tried them frozen? This best frozen margarita recipe will be your new go-to drink!
Ready for your new favorite drink? The margarita is my absolute favorite: I’m a sucker for tangy flavors. (Sour beers are the only beer I drink.) So when Alex suggested the idea of making a frozen margarita recipe: well, he didn’t have to ask me twice! I’m not sure how I’d never made one before: you’ve probably been well aware of them for years. But this is our new summer entertaining trick (besides frosé ): who can turn down a frozen margarita? We’ve spent a while honing this one to make sure it has the best frozen texture. Keep reading for the recipe!
How to make a frozen margarita
The big challenge in a good frozen margarita recipe is the frozen texture: will it stay frozen or melt within 2 seconds of pouring it into the glass? Alex and I tested a variety of methods for making a frozen margarita: blending the ingredients with ice, freezing the mixture before serving, and even using an ice cream maker! Many of our test runs melted in the first few minutes. Which, while delicious, is not exactly what you want from a frozen margarita! What came out as the best frozen margarita recipe? Here’s the method that we found worked best.
Here’s how to make a frozen margarita:
- Place best quality tequila, lime juice, orange juice, agave, and water into a container and freeze them overnight.
- The day of serving, pour the frozen ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.
- To serve, rim glasses with citrus margarita salt and pour in the frozen margaritas.
As you can see, this method requires thinking ahead! …which we were of course trying to avoid! Who wants to think a day ahead to make frozen margaritas? (Not me.) Unfortunately, we were unable to find a method for a frozen margarita that has a great frozen texture and is made on the day of serving: all those tests were a bit too melty. So, while it’s a bit of a buzz kill to have to think ahead on your frozen margs, this is one sacrifice you’ll have to make. And hey, at least you don’t have to buy an ice cream maker!
Important: get great tequila
One last note: buy a great tequila for this recipe! Since tequila is the main flavor in this frozen margarita, spending a few extra dollars on a high quality tequila is recommended! It will highly affect the final flavor of this recipe.
A note on margarita salt
Why do these frozen margaritas look so festive? Well, Alex developed a new margarita salt recipe too! It’s simply kosher salt, lime, and orange zest, so you’ll already have the zest on hand when making this frozen margarita recipe. Head to our Best Margarita Salt for instructions.
If you don’t want to use our fancy margarita salt, you can simply use kosher salt for rimming the glasses. We’ve found that kosher salt is a better size for rimming the glass than a flaky sea salt: the flaky sea salt that we had was a little too large for our taste. Of course, you can use any salt or purchased margarita salt to your liking! But we loved the way this margarita salt looked on the glass–and tasted!
And that’s it! This best frozen margarita recipe works for lots of occasions; it would be perfect for:
- A summer cookout
- As beach drinks at a cabin or cottage
- A barbecue al fresco
- Drinks for ladies night, a bachelorette party, or girls weekend
- A summer brunch (Margs for brunch? please advise)
